Signs To Replace Your Dock
Over time, it is crucial to make sure your wooden or aluminum dock is safe for you to use. For your friends and family, the wear and tear aluminum and wooden docks take on over time needs to be carefully reviewed before the start of each dock season! Not sure what to look out for? Here are four key areas to look for when deciding if your dock needs to be replaced!
1. Wooden Dock is Rotting
Naturally, fungus from the water will cause dry rotting for wooden docks. There are some instances where you can repair the area with new lumber, however this is only if the rotted area is small enough to be treated. The biggest sign that your wooden dock needs to be replaced is if you have multiple areas on your dock that are beginning to rot simultaneously. This is when you need to look into replacing your wooden dock.
2. Decking Boards Becoming Too Loose
Recognizing decking boards on your dock that are loose is a fairly obvious issue. However, these boards can still be hazardous to those trying to utilize your dock. If you encounter a couple loose decking boards, it may not be the main reason to replace your dock. Regardless, the dangerous situations they create require them to be addressed, and the more loose boards there are could be a sign you need to replace your dock.
3. Rusting Metal Components
Docks with metal components are subject to rusting over time, especially in salt water. In most circumstances, tiny areas of rust can be replaced fairly easily. A key when determining if your dock needs to be replaced is to recognize if multiple areas of your dock are rusting. If this is the case, you may need to look into a replacement for your dock.
4. Cracking or Warped Dock
A major reason for your dock to begin warping is the pressure from the waves and or current when the dock is on the water. The continuous current or wave pressure can create cracks in your dock over time. Accidents and crashes are also key factors when reviewing whether your dock is cracked or warped.
As always, small instances of warping or minor cracks can likely be repaired to a tiny area. Despite this, the main factor to look out for is if this occurs on numerous areas of your dock. Breaks and cracks in multiple areas is a major sign for your to replace your dock, before safety becomes too large of an issue.
